lds57 Lev Gurevich (Yehoshua Arieh) (1876-1943) received a Jewish religious education from his grandfather at home. He attended a gymnasium in St. Petersburg, and graduated in law from the University of St. Petersburg. Lev Gurevich was a Zionist activist and in 1919 became a member of the Central Committee of the Zionist Organization in Russia. In 1924 he became chairman of the organization. In 1925, under the guise of scientific research, Lev Gurevich published a Zionist work "Syria, Eretz-Israel, Mesopotamia" in a Soviet publishing house in Leningrad. He was also one of the founders of the Jewish religious community in Leningrad and headed it until 1929. One of Gurevich’s initiatives was an attempt to convene a conference of religious Jewish communities. Although the authorities approved the initiative, this attempt failed in the end. In 1929, Lev Gurevich was arrested and charged with combining his position in the Jewish religious community with his post as a Soviet official. He was sentenced to forced labor in the camps, and died in exile in Siberia in 1943.
lds79 In 2011, Dr. Shula Abramsky, the granddaughter of Lev and Zinaida Gurevich, transferred the collection to the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem.
