Dr. Moritz Veit (1808 Dessau - 1864 Bonn), was a German publisher, politician, writer, and communal leader. A member of the wealthy Veit family of Berlin, Moritz studied philosophy, history, and philology at the University of Berlin (1825-1832) and earned his doctorate in Jena in 1833. Veit also played an active part in public life such as chairman of the German publishers' organization (Börsenverein) from 1853 to 1861, and member of the Prussian House of Representatives. An elder of the Berlin Jewish community (1839–48), he was later chairman of its council. Veit developed communal schools and institutions, and drafted the 1860 statutes of the community --

lds57 Moritz Veit (1808 Dessau –1864 Bonn), was a German publisher, politician, and communal leader. A member of the wealthy Veit family of Berlin, Moritz studied philosophy, history, and philology at the University of Berlin (1825-1832) and earned his doctorate in Jena in 1833. His father, the businessman Philipp Veit (1758–1838), ran a hospitable house in Berlin. Heinrich Heine also took part in the “Thursday evenings” there. In 1834 Veit founded his own publishing house with Joseph Levy (later Joseph Lehfeldt) Veit & Company. They published authors such as L. Ranke, J.G. Fichte, A. von Chamisso, and F.C. von Savigny. After the death of his partner in 1858, Veit sold his shares and later on, in 1919 Veit & Company became the Walter de Gruyter publishing house.
Veit also played an active part in public life such as chairman of the German publishers' organization (Börsenverein) from 1853 to 1861, and a member of the Berlin municipal council for 20 years. He was elected to the 1848 Frankfurt Parliament, and after the revolution Veit was again one of the few Jewish representatives in the first chamber of the Prussian Parliament (1851)
later, as a member of the Prussian House of Representatives (1858–61. An elder of the Berlin Jewish community (1839–48), he was later chairman of its council. Veit developed communal schools and institutions, and drafted the 1860 statutes of the community. He was married to Johanna Elkan (1807–1889) from Weimar, the daughter of the banker Israel Julius Elkan.
