Valk, Eli

Eli (Ilya) Valk (1944, Buinsk) is a Jewish activist and refusenik from Riga. He was born to Zionist parents. In 1945 the family returned to Riga and from a young age he attended a synagogue in the city. Eli Valk became active in the Riga Jewish community in the late 1950s-early 1960s. He participated in the attempt to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust in Rumbula, maintained contacts with Israeli tourists and diplomats, and was one of the leaders of the Jewish underground groups in Riga. In 1971 he immigrated to Israel and worked for the Israeli governmental liaison organization “Nativ”, that maintained ties with Soviet Jews. He is the chairman of the “Association of Latvian and Estonian Jews in Israel.” The private collection of Eli Valk consists of Jewish historical and religious literature and Jewish samizdat, books, articles, information bulletins and reports on Soviet Jewry and migration. It includes materials originating from Jewish Western organizations who led the struggle for Soviet Jewry. There are papers of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ), the World Conference on Soviet Jewry (WCSJ), 35 Women's Campaign for Soviet Jewry, and other organizations. Biographical summary Eli (Ilya) Valk was born in Buinsk in 1944. There his parents were evacuated from Riga following the start of the war with Nazi Germany. In 1945 the family returned to Riga. Eli’s parents were Zionists, and in 1957 (after his father's death) the family applied to immigrate to Israel. From a young age Eli went to a synagogue in Riga and became a Jewish activist in the late 1950s-early 1960s. He take part in efforts of Riga’s activists to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust in Rumbula, maintained contacts with employees of the Israeli embassy in Moscow, and with Israelis who visited Riga. Eli Valk was one of the leaders in Jewish underground groups in Riga and represented the activists in the underground “All-National Coordinating Committee" - the VKK (1969). In 1971 Eli Valk immigrated to Israel and worked for the Israeli governmental liaison organization “Nativ”, that maintained ties with Soviet Jews. Later he headed the "Association for the Study of Jewish Communities", which published the book series "Aliya Library" and "Short Jewish Encyclopedia". He is the chairman of the “Association of Latvian and Estonian Jews in Israel.”
Ownership history The collection was transferred to the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem by Eli Valk.
