وصف المحتوى

The “Hasmonea” was a students’ Zionist organization established in Riga in 1922, with branches in the University of Tartu (Estonia) and in Kaunas (Lithuania). The “Hasmonea” in Tartu was founded in 1923 by former members of the Academic Society for Knowledge of Jewish History and Culture in Tartu. They were influenced by the visit to Riga of Vladimir Zeev Jabotinsky. The Hasmonea in Tartu cooperated actively with other Zionist organizations in Latvia and Lithuania, but had little contact with other Jewish student organizations in Tartu. In 1940, the “Hasmonea” was closed together with all other student organizations after the Soviet Occupation. The collection consists of copies of documents of the “Hasmonea” Fraternity of the University of Tartu. It contains: cash books; a “reskontro” book containing information on personal accounts; invitations send to “Hasmonea” from the Tartu municipality and the County Anti-tuberculosis Society to participate in charitable events; Hasomonea's charter and detailed comments to it including a detailed description of “Hasmonea’s” goals and rules of practical work --

وصف المحتوى
The collection contains materials of the Jewish Zionist fraternity “Hasmonea” (also“Hasmonaea”) which was active at the University of Tartu (Estonia) from 1923 to 1940. The collection includes the fraternity’s charter in Estonian, dated 1938. This is a short charter that discusses the fraternity’s activities at the university, proclaiming the fraternity’s goal as the “mental, cultural and physical development of its members” and not mentioning Zionist movement explicitly. The collection also includes comments on the charter, dated 1936-1939, including a description of the fraternity’s goals and rules. The “Hasmonea” was a Zionist-revisionist fraternity whose aim, inter alia, was to guide students in the development of national life and the Zionist movement. Among earlier materials in the collection there are invitations send to “Hasmonea” from the Tartu municipality and the County Anti-tuberculosis Society. The society invites “Hasmonea” members to participate in the “Days of the white flowers” (Valgelillepäeva) which raised funds for tuberculosis patients; there are invitations dated 1926-1928, 1930, 1931 and 1934. The collection also holds handwritten accounting documents dated 1939-1940: a cash book with general accounting information and a “reskontro” book containing information on personal accounts. The latter accounting book also contains recordings of financial operations made by the “Hasmonea’s” Alumni Association in Riga.

The “Hasmonea” fraternity of the University of Tartu was registered in the Republic of Estonia on 5 October 1923. It was a Zionist organization established by former members of the Academic Society for Knowledge of Jewish History and Culture in Tartu following the visit of Vladimir Zeev Jabotinsky to Riga. Previously, in 1922, the “Hasmonea” fraternity was established in Riga. Since the fraternity in Tartu was a branch of the organization in Riga, it participated little in student activities in Tartu and had few contacts with the other Jewish student organizations in Tartu. The “Hasmonea” feuded with “Limuvia", a non-Zionist Jewish fraternity at the University of Tartu. However, the “Hasmonea” cooperated actively with other Zionist corporations in Latvia and Lithuania. “Hasmonea’s” first public appearance in Tartu was in 1926 (the members were wearing the fraternity’s symbols and colours: azure, gold and white). In 1927 the fraternity’s building was first located in Aja Street 37 in Tartu, then Auriku 4
and from 1931 to 1938 it was located at Karlova (Kalevi) 18-2. The “Hasmonea” Fraternity Alumni Association was established in Estonia in 1935. In 1940, following Soviet Occupation, the “Hasmonea” was dissolved together with all other student organizations and “Hasmonea” members were arrested and sent to the Gulag.
