In 1926 the Tallinn City Police Office (Tallinna Linna Politseivalitsus) was reorganized and renamed the Tallinn-Harju Prefecture. The prefecture's headquarters were located in Tallinn, and it also operated in Nõmme, Keila and Paldiski. The collection comprises materials of the Tallinn-Harju Police Prefecture from 1939-1940. These materials include records from liquidations committees which were gathered in order to abolish associations and societies in accordance with the Law on Associations, 19 April 1938. It includes files with documents about the closure of various Jewish societies (Tallinn Zionist Organization, Jewish Society “Ort”, Jewish Scout Friends Association “Hasomer Hazair” and more). The materials contain notifications on the liquidation and questionnaires with answers about the organizations’ activities, their board, and reasons for their closure --

The collection comprises materials of the Tallinn-Harju Police Prefecture from 1939-1940 and refer to liquidations committees which were gathered in order to abolish associations and societies in Estonia in accordance with the Law on Associations of 19 April 1938. The collection includes files related to the closure of 13 Jewish organizations: Tallinn Jewish Social Association “Achdus”; Tallinn Society for the Promotion of Jewish Ethnic Culture “Friva”; Jewish Scout Friends Association “Hasomer Hazair”; Tallinn Jewish Youth Society “Hatchio”; Estonian Zionist Labour Organisation “Hitachdut”; Estonian Union of Jewish Congregations; Jewish Tennis Club in Tallinn; Jewish Society “Ort”; Tallinn Jewish Chess Society; Tallinn Jewish Society “Women’s Circle” (“Naiste Ring”); Tallinn Jewish Youth Self-Education Circle; Tallinn Jewish Theatre Society; and Tallinn Zionist Organization. All the files include a notification on behalf of the Tallinn-Harju Prefecture about the future closure of the organization/society according to the law. For each organization there is also a questionnaire about the organization’s activities and reasons for the closure. Some of the questionnaires include answers on when and why an organization ceased its activities, whether there was a charter, financial assets and minutes of meetings (or other materials) left from the organization, and information on the organization’s board. The notices from the prefect may also include addresses and contacts of responsible persons as well as information on the chairpersons of the liquidation committee.

lds57 The Tallinn City Police Office (Tallinna Linna Politseivalitsus) operated in the period between 1918 and 1925. In 1926 a new police authority named the Tallinn-Harju Prefecture was established. The Prefecture operated in the cities of Tallinn, Nõmme, Keila and Paldiski. The headquarters were in Tallinn. The Tallinn-Harju Prefecture was abolished in 1940 during the Soviet occupation.
