The Limuvia Fraternity Alumni Association in Estonia was an apolitical Jewish students’ organization established in the University of Tartu in 1922. Any member could hold their own political views based on the recognition of the rights of the Jews as a nation. The Limuvia had branches in Riga and Berlin, and had close ties with Vetulia in Riga and Vetaria (Beitaria) in Kaunas. The collection of the Limuvia includes its charters in Estonia and its branch in Berlin, and a rich collection of cards from approximately 1935-1938 that provides information on 373 Alumni Association members --

وصف المحتوى
The collection includes two charters of the association, one in Estonian and the other in German. According to the charter in Estonian the Alumni Association’s board was located in Tallinn. As stated in the charter, the Alumni Association was dedicated to uphold the principles of the Limuvia Fraternity and maintain relations between the members of the fraternity after graduation from the University of Tartu. The association was also committed to help members in need (or their families in case of death of the fraternity’s member). Only graduates of the Limuvia Fraternity were able to join the Alumni Association. The association received regular contributions by members, donations and funds from events held by the association. The charter also gives information on the terms for the election of the association’s board as well as other general regulations and contains terms for liquidation and dissolution under which the association’s property belongs to the Limuvia Fraternity; it is also stated that the Alumni Association should choose another beneficiary in the event that the Limuvia Fraternity is dissolved. The charter in German refers to the branch of the association in Berlin. It aimed to help members’ network and provided material assistance to its members in need; the association also received regular contributions and member’s donations. The association’s board was in Berlin, their regular monthly meetings were scheduled on Mondays. The collection also includes a rich collection of cards from approximately 1935-1938 that provides information on 373 Alumni Association members. The information on these cards is typewritten, sometimes supplemented by handwritten notes. The cards are arranged in alphabetical order, mainly in German. Each card contains personal information on the association’s members such as name, address, profession; some cards also contain dates of birth and death.

lds57 “The Limuvia Literary, Musical and Scientific Society of Jewish Students” was first established in the University of Tartu (then the Russian Empire) in 1907. Unlike the majority of institutions for higher education in Tsarist Russia, the University of Tartu (then known as Derpt or Dorpat) enjoyed relatively independent status. Students of this German-speaking institution were allowed to establish and maintain fraternities and societies that flourished throughout the Tsarist period and the period of interwar Estonian independence until the Soviet takeover in 1940. “The Limuvia Literary, Musical and Scientific Society of Jewish Students” was founded by a merger of two separate Jewish student societies: the "Literary and Musical Society" (established in 1883) and the "Scientific Association of History and Literature" (established in 1884). The name Limuvia (or Limuwia) derives from the first letters of the society's German name Literarischer-Musikalischer und Wissenschaftlicher Verein. Following the establishment of the independent Estonia, it was registered as the “Limuvia” Society on October 1922. The Limuvia was an apolitical Jewish organization in which any member could hold his own political views based on the recognition of the rights of the Jews as a nation. The Limuvia had branches in Riga and Berlin, and had close ties with Vetulia in Riga and Vetaria (Beitaria) in Kaunas.
