رقم النظام A two thousand year old conflict began to come end formally on 30 December when Deputy Foreign Minister Yossi Beilin signed a fundamental agreement with Monsignor Claudio Maria Celli, Vatican Undersecretary for Relations Between States in Jerusalem's Foreign Ministry headquarters. Beilin pointed out that just as a new era had dawned on the eve of the Jewish New Year with the signing of the Israel-PLO Declaration of principles, so was a new era dawning on the eve of the Christian New Year with this sgreement. Immediately, speculation began about a papal visit to Israel in the near future with snme sources suggesting it could take place even before the end of 1794. Monsignor Celli tried to play down the chances of such a visit so soon. Beilin called the agreement a "victory of sanity for the Jewish people and for the State of Israel" and he invoked the words of Isaiah: "Peace, peace to those far away and to those nearby, says the Lord". Celli agreed with Beilin that the agreement indeed had a great spiritual significance for millions all over th" world - and that Catholic-Jewish relations would be given a new push. It represented a for cry from the days when Vatican officials could not even mention the word "Israel'. In 1964 Pope Paul VI had visited not "Israel' but "Jerusalem, the Holy Land" and then sent a courtesy telegram to "President Shazar, Tel Aviv". The agreement paves the way for normalisation of relations between Israel and the Vatican.
