رقم النظام What seemed unthinkable at the beginning of winter is a reality today. The Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) is potentially in a flood situation. This year's unprecedented rains, a record this century, have added over three metres to the lake, which was last September at a record Iow and dangerous level. With an eye to improved and considered water management the Mekorot Water authority has been pumping millions of cubic metres of water from the lake into the national carrier from where it is being diverted to fill the countries main underground reservoirs. Although specific information has not been made available on the degree of replenishment, it is known that the Yarkon Taninim and the coastal aquifer have both shown considerable improvement in the reserves, although this season will not in itself be sufficient to bring the reserves back to their normal level. Last Sunday the dam at the southern end of the lake was opened to allow water to flow down the River Jordan to the Dead Sea. Even though Merkorot have been pumping 1.5 million cubic metres per day from the lake into the national carrier and allowing 3.5 million cubic metres to flow into the Dead Sea, the lake continues to rise at the rate of one centimetre an hour - another record. Record snow fall on the Hermon will also guarantee over one metre of water when the snows melt in the spring. Thousands of fish have been caught by the grille instead of being washed away down the River Jordan when the sluice gates were opened on Sunday.
