رقم النظام This winter has been officially declared the wettest winter since records began in 1904. Almost on a daily basis, newspapers and the electronic media have stories of flooding and damage caused by the unrelenting rain storms. The rise in the level of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) has been followed with the interest normally reserved for football scores. The Merkorot water authority has been pumping millions of gallons from the lake into depleted underground reservoirs in this water bonanza. The lake, which was four metres below its maximum level, has only one metre to go before reaching its optimum level. This metre is guaranteed by the melting in the spring of snow on Mount Hermon. Merkorot, have had to open the southern sluice gates of the lake to allow water to flow into the Jordan River and on to the Dead Yea. This action is to avoid flooding in towns and settlements adjoining the lake. There have been instances of reservoirs in the north overflowing. In one instance a reservoir at Merom Golan burst and sent millions of cubic metres of water to waste across the Syrian border. On the whole, though the storms are regarded as nothing less than a blessing after several years of poor rains. The water authority also 'seeds' the clouds which can give up to 20% more precipitation. Poor water management resulted in important water sources being overdrawn. Merkorot have now undoubtably learnt their lesson and even though this winter's rain will replace a significant amount of the shortfall - although not all strict water quotas will apply in the coming summer, when there is no rain whatsoever.
