Deník 1942-5

Memoirs of a Jew, born in 1930, who grew up in Náchod, Czechoslovakia. Kraus began to keep a diary when still at home in Náchod, and continued when he and his parents were deported to Theresienstadt in 1942. In December 1943, they were deported to Auschwitz; the diary he had been writing was lost. Kraus's father was murdered in Auschwitz, and his mother in Stutthof. He was interned in the barracks of the Theresienstadt children in Auschwitz, and was one of eight or nine children from that group who were selected by Mengele to live. In the death march of January 1945, he ended up in Mauthausen, where he was liberated. He then undertook, between 1945-47, to write down his experiences in the camps, focusing on Auschwitz and Mauthausen. Includes reproductions of original drawings by Kraus in his memoirs. After the war, Kraus returned to Náchod and was raised by family friends and relatives. He later immigrated to the USA.
