A history of Jews in the territory of present-day Ukraine, from Jewish settlement in the Greek colonies of Crimea and on the shore of the Black Sea through the Khazar Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, up to the 1930s. Notes the tendency in Soviet historiography of the 1950s-70s to diminish the significance of the Khazar state, and the proliferation of pseudo-historical writings in the 1970s-90s depicting Jewish Khazars as the main enemies of Russia. All the Cossack and peasant uprisings in Ukraine of the 17th-18th centuries turned, at some stage, against the Jews. Describes anti-Jewish restrictions, and expulsions of Jews from Russian-held left-bank Ukraine in 1667-1772. Dwells on the pogroms in 1881-82 and in 1905-06, stressing that the authorities sympathized with the pogromists and were unwilling to suppress the riots. Deals also with the pogroms of the Civil War period, in particular those perpetrated by the Directory's forces, and with anti-Jewish politics of the Ukrainian Directory.
