A popularly written essay on non-Jews who helped or rescued Jews during the Holocaust, and on Jews who resisted the Nazi genocide. Dwells on Germans who helped Jews or, like Kurt Gerstein, tried to alert the world; countries which, although controlled by Germany, refused to give up their Jews; the rescue of Jews by organizations and individuals; consuls who helped Jews escape; Jewish uprisings in camps and ghettos; and spontaneous acts of resistance.
