Has Antisemitism continued in East Germany after World War II?

Antisemitism was not eradicated immediately with the end of the war in the territories which were to become the GDR. However, it was forbidden; the authorities, while supporting the doctrine that socialist revolution would eliminate antisemitism automatically, meantime suppressed it. This tendency came to an end in 1952-53, with the Stalinization of the GDR and due to Ulbricht's group, which wanted to use antisemitism in its struggle for power. The Holocaust was not denied or kept secret in the post-1953 period, but its uniqueness was denied. The foreign policy of the GDR was anti-Israeli, in line with the policy of the Soviet bloc. East German anti-Zionism was not intentionally antisemitic, but helped to preserve anti-Jewish prejudices. The political shifts of 1988-90 encouraged the country's leadership to commemorate the Holocaust and to recognize their responsibility for it, but at the same time unleashed antisemitic incidents. Recent polls show, however, that East Germans are less prejudiced against Jews than West Germans or Austrians.
