Unsere jüdischen Nachbarn

Describes Jewish life in the three villages over the centuries, including residence and other restrictions and exorbitant taxation. Traces the history of families who lived in the village in the 19th-20th centuries, mentioning the fate of individuals in the Holocaust. Pp. 370-394, "Das Ende der drei Judengemeinden: Verfolgung - 'Kristallnacht' in Altenstadt und Umgebung", comment on the failure to prosecute local Nazis after the war and the mild sentences imposed on the few who were put on trial. On the basis of reminiscences of victims and eyewitnesses, chronicles brutal attacks on Jews in their homes already in 1934 (the "Schreekensnacht von Altenstadt"), and describes the destruction of homes, shops, and of the synagogue, and beatings and arrests of Jews in the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. After this, almost all the remaining Jews left the villages for Frankfurt. From there, most were deported to the East; a few succeeded in emigrating.
