Written in macaronic Italian. First leaf blank. Ornamental initials, initials. Name of the author given in acrostic by the first letter of the 38 chapters of the book: Poliam frater Franciscus Columna peramauit. [1b]: "Leonardus Crassus Veronensis Guido... Duci Urbini". F4a: "Li errori del libro" and colophon: Venetiis Mense decembri. M.ID. in aedibus Aldi Manutii... Hebrew characters on b8a, b8b. In a case, embossed binding with gold, gilt edges. Initials: a-y8, z10, A-E8, F4. Hain 5501, Proctor 5574, BMC V, p.561, Polain 1126. Slight variation in pagination and some pages lacking in both copies held by NLI. Ascribed by Maurizio Calvesi to a different Francesco Colonna, ca. 1453-1517, in La "pugna d'amore in sogno" di Francesco Colonna romano, 1996 Ascribed to Leon Battista Alberti by Liane Lefaivre in Leon Battista Alberti's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, 1997. In rebinding process by former owners of NLI copy 2, preliminary pages were omitted, final 7 pages were bound out of order and the last page was trimmed, deleting the publication information (place, printer and date). Text in a highly stylized Italian that is a compound of Latin and Italian it also includes Arabic, Greek, and Hebrew. |
