Nationalsozialismus und Evangelische Kirche in Bremen

Ch. 7, pt. 2 (pp. 269-284) deals with the response of the Evangelical Church to persecution of the Jews in Bremen. The German Christians welcomed the racial laws as protection against the "flood of Jewish-materialistic spirit." The Confessing Church tried to protest against the exclusion of "non-Aryan Christians" in 1935 and gave them some protection. The Stephane Church was accused of sympathy with non-Aryan members and its pastor, Gustav Greiffenhagen, was denounced and disciplined. Bishop Wurm's protest in 1943 was ignored. Agrees with the evaluation of Dietrich Bonhoeffer that the Evangelical Church failed to protest.
