מארקולשטי

A memorial book for the Jewish community of Mărculeşti, then in Bessarabia, now in Moldova. Pp. 409-487 contain brief essays by former residents, relating the fate of the Jews in the Holocaust. In June 1941 the area was occupied by Romania, which collaborated with the Nazis in the extermination of the Jews. In July there was a pogrom and a massacre of the ca. 600 Jews who remained in Mărculeşti. For a brief period in the fall, the town was used as an internment camp for Jews who were being deported to Transnistria. Pp. 547-550 contain a list of Holocaust victims.
