Autobiographical interviews of Jews born in German speaking countries ("Yekkes") - 50/60 years after their immigration to Israel

Born 10/15/07, Berlin. Medical assistant. Emigration to Athens 1933; 1935 to Palestine. House wife and mother, worked for a radiologist. Interview: childhood in Berlin, mother born there, WWI when she was 7. Inflation. Father died when she was 13. Brother 3 years younger, not on good terms. He went to Brussels and then to USA, was in an internment camp. Death of father. He was a salesman, not orthodox. Did not know for a long time what being Jewish meant. Did not attend religion lessons. Medical assistant, worked in a children's home. Entire family lived in Berlin, nobody died, everybody emigrated, but nobody else to Israel. Uncle sent her to Athens. Worked in a Jewish hospital. After that she did not find work in Berlin. No connections to Zionist groups. Good memories of the 20s. Christian school, no negative experiences. Other school, ant-Semitic experience, she was taken out. Assimilated but contact with Jews. After immigration to Palestine surrounded by polish Jews, did not understand Yiddish. Does not like Yiddish. Emigration 1933 with certificate, took along a friend. She sent for her mother, lived with her for 18 years, went to London and stayed there. Many relatives in L. Athens: found work there. About life in Athens, no Jewish community. Good memories. Emigration to Palestine, help from English soldiers. Her husband found work as a doctor in Haifa. Living in Haifa. 1937 birth of son, quit work. Only spoke German with her son. About son. She doesn't speak Hebrew ; well. Patients of her husband primarily Polish. 1944 divorce and move to Jerusalem. Very poor. 1945 mother came to Tel Aviv. Nanny in a teacher's house. About son. How she met her second husband. Wedding 1965. First husband's second wife. Divorce trial. Many contacts with Germany through second husband. About friends and travels. Visits to Germany and Europe. 1938 visit to Europe, cried when she saw the woods. About trees. Arabs. Jewish- Arabic relations. ¼ year in Lebanon. Israeli-Arabic relations.
