In vol. 7, pp. 186-539 relate the experiences of Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum from 1938-early 1944, as a hasidic Rebbe in the town of Szatmár (Satu-Mare) in Romania, and describe the suffering of the Jews under Hungarian rule from 1940. In vol. 8, pp. 1-486 relate Teitelbaum's experiences from the Nazi occupation in March 1944. First he went into hiding, and then fled to Cluj. He was interned in the ghetto for a short time, and then transported to Budapest to join other Jews who were being sent to Switzerland through a deal made by Rudolf Kasztner with the Nazis. Provides documents and details on the transport of these Jews, who were first sent to Bergen-Belsen and finally reached Switzerland in December 1944. After the war Teitelbaum immigrated to the U.S. Stresses the religious aspects of the Rebbe's experiences, and his adherence to Halakhah even in the most difficult times and particularly in Bergen-Belsen; the involvement of the American Vaad ha-Hatzalah and its representative in Switzerland, Jitschak Sternbuch, in his rescue; and his view that the Holocaust was a punishment for the sins of the Zionists who attempted to establish a Jewish state before the coming of the Messiah.
