Biographical summary Kurt Schmidek arrived in Eretz Israel in 1939 from Vienna with the help of Youth Aliya where he started using his Hebrew name Schmuel. While attending a boarding school, he received numerous letters from his family in Vienna, describing their life in the war torn city and their failed attempts to make aliya. Kurt unsuccessfully tried to enlist Zionist organizations to help his family. They were murdered between 1941 and 1942. One uncle managed to escape to New York.
