Pulver, Lev

Lev Pulver (1883 Verkhnedneprovsk - 1970 Moscow) was a famous Soviet-Jewish musician and composer. He came from a family of renowned klezmorim (Jewish folk musicians), and studied violin from early childhood with his father. From age ten he performed at Jewish weddings, and in 1906 he began studying in the St. Petersburg conservatory. He graduated with a silver medal in 1908. Until 1923 L. Pulver was a violinist in the opera orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and performed in numerous concerts. Then he was appointed as musical director of the Moscow Jewish State Theatre (the GOSET), for which he wrote music based on Jewish traditions. The private collection of Lev Pulver includes his musical scores for various plays in the Moscow Jewish State Theatre, scripts of the plays, his arrangements of Yiddish folk songs, drafts of musical notations and music programs of the Moscow GOSET --

Description
The collection relates to Lev Pulver's activities as musician and composer in Moscow. It includes musical scores written by Pulver for various plays for the Moscow Jewish State Theatre. For example, there are notation records for following works: play “200,000” (1923); Adventures of Benjamin the Third (1927); “Tevye - the Milkman” (1938); “Tzvei Kunilemlel” (1940); “Uriel Acosta” (1940); cello and piano in “Jewish Dance” (1942); for the performance “Eve of the Holiday” (1946); raucous “Freylekhs” (1945) and more. The collection contains also Pulver’s scores of music for Soviet songs and marches, his drafts of musical notations, and his arrangements and music written for various artists including Nehama Lifshitsaite (1964). The collection includes the text of the Moscow Jewish State Theatre production "The Capricious Bride" (1944), and its music program. The collection also consists of Lev Pulver’s numerous arrangements of Yiddish folk songs: "Dos kind ligt in Vigele”, "A Pastechl", A Glesele lehaim", “Wolt ikh sain a foigele”, "Hot der Rebe gevolt vain trinken", "Cheri bim bom" and more. There are also musical scores by Lev Pulver for Jewish folklore songs: "Turnus-Runus", “Hi noch iofi raiosi" (text Shalom Aleichem), “A rum main kopf", "A freilechs" (text D. Blomberg), "Hei briderlex kleizmorex" (text Aron Vergelis) and more.
