Rabbiner Dr. Philipp Bloch (1841-1923) war deutscher Historiker und Reformrabbiner. Er wurde in Tworog geboren und studierte in Breslau. Nach kurzer Amtszeit als Lehrer in München wurde Bloch 1871 zum Rabbiner der liberalen „Brüdergemeinde“ in Posen berufen, wo er rund 50 Jahre wirkte. Nach dem Anschluss Schlesiens an Polen nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg verzog Bloch nach Berlin. Bloch war führendes Mitglied in der „Vereinigung der liberalen Rabbiner Deutschlands“ und aktiv in wissenschaftlichen Vereinen. 1905 war er Mitbegründer des „Gesamtarchivs der deutschen Juden“ in Berlin. Bloch befasste sich in seiner wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit vor allem mit Religionsphilosophie und der Kabbala und verfasste mehrere Werke zur jüdischen Geschichte in Polen und insbesondere in Posen --

Biographical summary Rabbi Dr. Philipp Bloch (1841 Tworog, Prov. Silesia - 1923 Berlin) was a German historian and reform rabbi who attended the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau from 1857 to 1867. In 1860 he enrolled at the University of Breslau/Wroclaw, and in 1865 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the concept of God under Aristotle. After a short tenure as a teacher in Munich, Bloch was appointed rabbi of the liberal "Israelitische Brüdergemeinde" (Brethren Congregation) in Posen in 1871, where he worked for around 50 years. After Silesia was annexed to Poland after the First World War, Bloch moved to Berlin. Throughout his life he was involved in the field of Jewish educational policy and for the welfare of Jewish orphans. In 1911 he was appointed professor on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Bloch was married to Luise Feust (1849 Fürth -1924 Berlin).
Bloch was a leading member of the "Vereinigung der liberalen Rabbiner Deutschlands" (Association of Liberal Rabbis in Germany) and active in scholarly associations. In 1903 he was one of the founding members of the "Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaft des Judentums" (Society for the Advancement of the Science of Judaism. In 1905 he was a co-founder of the "Gesamtarchiv der deutschen Juden" in Berlin. In his academic work, Bloch was mainly concerned with the philosophy of religion and the Kabbalah and wrote several works on Jewish history in Poland and in particular in Poznan.
