Enlarge text Shrink text

Biographical summary Dr. Aaron Heppner (1865 Pleschen/ Pleszew, Posen - Breslau 1938), rabbi, historian, and archivist
son of Paul Heppner (1833-1912), a baker by profession, and his wife Ricka Henschel. In 1885 Heppner began studying philosophy, history, and oriental languages at the university in Berlin, and at the Berlin rabbinical seminary. His doctorate he received in 1889 from the University of Halle. Heppner served as rabbi in Koschmin (Koźmin) from 1890. From 1906 he also took over the rabbinate in Jarotschin (Jarocin), and held both offices until 1920, when Posen became Polish again. After that Heppner settled in Breslau, where he worked as a rabbi and teacher. In addition, he founded and directed (from 1924) the archive of the Jewish community in Breslau. After 1935 he became seriously ill. In particular, the news of the arrest and imprisonment of two of his sons in the Buchenwald camp worsened Heppner's health. Heppner was married to Selma (Sara Dorothea?) Goldmann (1863 Ostrowo - 1923 Breslau), daughter of Isidor and Ottilie Goldmann.
His scholarly interest was devoted to local Jewish history, first of his native province and later of Breslau. His main publications, apart from contributions on the history of Jewish families to periodicals and newspapers, were "Aus Vergangenheit und Gegenwart der Juden und der jüdischen Gemeinden in den Posener Landen" (with Isaak J. Herzberg, 1909–29) and "Jüdische Persönlichkeiten in und aus Breslau" (1931).
