Lifschutz, Ezechiel

Ezekiel Lifschutz was born in Radom, Poland in 1902 and immigrated to New York in 1923. A scholar of Jewish history and proponent of the Yiddish language, he became involved with YIVO early on and functioned as its chief archivist from 1954 until his retirement in 1973. He died in February 2000.

Description
The letters in the collection are catalogued by correspondent, retaining Lifschutz’s own arrangement, with some folders containing his handwritten notes in Yiddish about the correspondent. Of special interest is a journal containing his personal recollections and opinions about prominent Yiddishist figures, academic and literary, with whom he worked, as well as a diary from the 1960s in which he discusses important visitors to the YIVO archive and various events in Yiddish and Jewish New York society.
