Dr. Jacob Cohn (1843 Altona - 1916 Zabrze (then Hindenburg, Upper Silesia), rabbi. Cohn attended the Yeshiva of Jacob Ettlinger, and received his doctorate from the University of Berlin, in 1867. In the years 1867-1870 he studied and later taught at the Yeshiva of Azriel Hildesheimer in Eisenstadt. In 1872, the Katowice Jewish community elected Cohn as their first rabbi, a position he held until his death. Cohn distinguished himself in particular through his commitment to needy Jews in Russia and Palestine. On the occasion of the Great Synagogue's opening in Katowice, he published "Geschichte der Synagogengemeinde Kattowitz O/S" (1900) --

Biographical summary Dr. Jacob Cohn (1843 Altona - 1916 Zabrze (then Hindenburg, Upper Silesia) - first rabbi of the Jewish community in Katowice. He was the son of the merchant Aaron Cohn and his wife Sophie née Weinheim Dreyfuss. Cohn graduated from Altona High School and attended the Yeshiva of Jacob Ettlinger. In 1864 he started studies at the University of Berlin, 1867, he defended his doctorate in Halle. In the years 1867-1870 he studied and later taught at the Yeshiva of Azriel Hildesheimer in Eisenstadt. In 1872, the Katowice Jewish community elected Cohn as their first rabbi, a position he held until his death. In 1872, he became a teacher of religion in a junior high and high school in Katowice, where he taught until 1914.
He was one of the most respected citizens of Katowice, and also founder and headmaster of the Hebrew school in Katowice. Furthermore, he was a founding member, chairman and member of dozens of committees and associations. Under Rabbi Cohn's supervision, the "Hovevei Zion" conference took place in Katowice in November 1884. Cohn distinguished himself in particular through his commitment to needy Jews in Russia and Palestine. On the occasion of the Great Synagogue's opening in Katowice, he published "Geschichte der Synagogengemeinde Kattowitz O/S" (1900). He was married to Ernestine Goldstein (1853 Katowice - 1896) and they had six children.
