In 1918, following the end of WWI, the first independent Lithuanian government was established. The Board of Education was founded as one of the new ministries and was responsible for all educational matters in the state. This collection contains documents of the Lithuanian Board of Education, primarily related to the bureaucracy of running and overseeing various Jewish schools, rabbinical seminaries, teachers’ seminaries, and other Jewish educational, cultural and sports associations. Accordingly, it contains materials on: “Javne” teachers' seminaries in Kaunas and in Telšiai; “ORT” artisans’ and agriculture association; the “Tsairei-Israel” Association; the “Tarbut” association’ schools, seminaries and kindergartens; the “Kultur-Lige” and more. An important part of the collection is correspondence of the Board of Education with other state institutions, government offices, Jewish associations and communities. The documents mention establishment of Jewish primary schools, study programs, teachers, student progress, the issue of certificates, etc. The collection includes minutes of teachers’ councils’ meetings, lists with names of Jewish students, teachers and their autobiographies. Another important part of the collection are materials related to Jewish communal and religious life in Lithuania. For example, it includes: minutes of the meetings of the Jewish Council for Religious Affairs in 1926; lists of rabbis; minutes of elections of rabbis and records on appointment of rabbis; correspondence with rabbis; records on opening of synagogues; statutes of the Jewish communities, etc. --

Description
This collection consists of Jewish-related documents of the Lithuanian Board of Education. It includes materials concerning activities of “Javne” teachers' seminaries in Kaunas and Telšiai, “ORT” artisans’ and agriculture association, the “Tarbut” association, the “Tsairei-Israel” Association, “Kultur-Lige” and more. In the “Javne” Kaunas branch files of 1921-1924, there are for example: seminary’s statute; lists and autobiographies of the seminary’s teachers; correspondence with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Jewish Affairs about study programs, rooms, teachers, etc. In the Telšiai branch files, there are: lists of students and teachers; teachers’ autobiographies; minutes of the teachers' council; correspondence with the Ministry of Defense concerning exemption of the students from military service; reports for 1938; lesson and chore plans; correspondence with the seminary about the approval of teachers; papers on the students’ progress and the issue of certificates. Additional Examples of Jewish-related materials is correspondence from 1921-1922 with the Ministry of Jewish Affairs, Jewish associations and communities about the "ORT" school, establishment of Jewish primary schools, their organizing, financial support, etc. Materials of the “Tarbut” include, for instance, correspondence with the director of the “Tarbut” teachers’ courses in Kaunas, correspondence on the activities of the teachers’ seminary in Vilnius, study program in Natural History, statute and curricula of the association’ kindergartens, and a request on behalf of the association to allow preparatory courses for kindergartens’ directors. The collection also contains: statute of the "Tsairei-Israel" teachers' courses; correspondence related to the Rabbinical Seminary in Telšiai and Panevezys; records regarding activities of the Jewish sports society in Telšiai; papers on the establishment of the Jewish People's University in Lithuania (1922-1923); lists of artists, orchestra members and technical staff of the Jewish Theater of Lithuania from 1937-1938. An important part of the collection are materials related to Jewish communal and religious life in Lithuania: minutes of the meetings of the Jewish Council for Religious Affairs in 1926; minutes of elections of rabbis and councils at synagogues; opening of the synagogues; correspondence of the rabbinic executive committee from 1938; lists of rabbis in Lithuania; messages about Jewish pogroms in Varniai from 1935-1936; a note on the activities of the Vilna Jewish community; taxes on kosher meat; statutes of the Jewish communities; correspondence with rabbis; newspapers in Yiddish; records on appointment of rabbis and organizational issues of the Jewish communities.
