Description
This collection comprises materials created by the Vilnius City Magistrate. Numerous records refer to management and activities of the Jewish schools in the city. There are papers on school doctors, hygienists, psychological laboratories, school laboratories, central school workshops, reports on the activities of summer camps and reports on funds for additional food for children, information about number of classes, pupils, teachers, technical staff, estimates for renovations and repairs, purchase of clothing and footwear, subsidies, medical documents of pupils of vocational schools and courses for adults, cultural and educational organizations, and kindergartens. For example, the collection contains materials dated 1929-1930 on "Talmud-Tora Miejski", a school and Jewish orphanage. Another example is a file from 1936 with records on "Tarbut" and "Szul-kult" affiliated schools: correspondence concerning renovation, bills, cost estimates, receipts, applications, etc. Materials in the collection contain information on schools’ funding, lists of pupils and statistics related to the Jewish educational network in Vilnius. The collection also contains correspondence from 1935-1936 on subsidies to the Jewish theatre. Declarations of Jewish real estate owners, and biographical information on some prominent Jewish citizens including rabbis are also part of the collection. For example, there are biographical data related to Sofia Dubnova-Erlikh, Chaim Grade, Yitzhak Witenberg, Rabbi Hayim Ozer Grodzenski, Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz and others.

Biographical summary The Vilnius City Magistrate resumed its activities after the Polish army occupied Vilnius in the spring of 1919. The activities of the city council and magistrate were controlled by general government bodies of the city of Vilnius and the Vilnius Administrative District (later the voivodeship). The Vilnius City Magistrate was the executive body of the Vilnius City Municipality. The Magistrate implemented the decisions of the Vilnius City Council.
