  • יצחק כצנלסון כתב את השיר בשנת תרס"ו (1906), בשנת תרע"א (1910) הותאם השיר ללחן ערבי עממי. על פי זמרשת מילות השיר בערבית נפתחים בשורה "שפתהא שפתהא תכ'בז עלא אל-סאג'י מגדור".
    דוד אבישר סיפר ב"במערכה": "היה זה בשנת תרע"א [לחגיגות חנוכה בחברון]... תלמידי כיתה ו' הכינו את החיזיון "מכירת יוסף" לקצנלסון, הפותח בשיר "יפים הלילות בכנען". התלמידים שיננו בהתלהבות את התפקידים וחסרה לנו נעימה ל"יפים הלילות" נעימה כנענית, מזרחית, הולמת למלים ול"אמנים". נסינו בכה ובכה עד שהגענו לנעימה הרווחת כיום לשיר זה".
    השיר נפתח במוטיב בסגנון אלתור כפרי המכונה עתאבא. העתאבא פותח תמיד בצליל גבוה, לרוב בקוורטה או בקווינטה, וממנו תתבצע ירידה.
    לשיר זה אין מלחין ידוע ולכן ייתכנו הבדלים בין הביצועים השונים.
