Jews did not live in detached from the surrounding society, and many state, district, city and church archives kept numerous documentation about Jews. In some cases, this includes archives of Jewish communities, organizations and individuals that found their way to general archives, but for the most part these are documentation about Jews that was created by various ruling authorities. The CAHJP initiated surveys and photocopy projects in hundreds of archives around the world in which numerous documentation on Jewish life has been located and tens of millions of photocopies have been copied. The copied material has been divided according to the country in which the material was copied (according to the current state division), with internal division according to institutions and departments in the source archive.
