Handling archival items

Once the item is received, the viewer undertakes to handle it with the utmost care:

  • Minimize direct handling of the item. Paper and parchment are very sensitive to moisture and to the natural oil in our hands that harm the pages. Ensure that your hands are clean and dry before any contact with the item. Mishandling the item may cause its rapid deterioration.
  • Do not tear or fold; do not attach bookmarks, staples or any other foreign object. Do not insert anything into the book or on the item.
  • Do not erase or write any symbols, remarks, additions in the body of the material, in the margins or on the back of the files. Personal notes will be allowed only your own paper in pencil.
  • Avoid food or drink close to the item.
  • Do not re-arrange the order of the documents in the file. If you discover an error in the registration or arrangement of the material, please notify the archive's staff.
  • Do not leave the item unattended without informing the reading room staff.

Damage to manuscripts, books and archival items are accumulative. Improper use can lead to the material’s rapid deterioration.
A consultation can be scheduled if necessary.

How do I photocopy archival material?

In accordance with the guidelines of our Conservation and Restoration Laboratory, it is permitted to photocopy printed archival material using the photocopier in the reading room (for a fee), under supervision and after receiving permission from the attendant present in the reading room. Handwritten archival items can be scanned using the scanner located in the reading hall or with a private digital camera. Alternatively, you may order a scan of the item by filling out an online form. This service is available for a fee. There is a limit on the amount of material which can be photocopied or scanned from a particular archive.

  • Any photographing, scanning, copying etc. of archival items is subject to the Israeli Copyright Act of 2007.
  • It is the sole responsibility of all visitors to ensure that any usage of a copy, scan or photograph of an item from the CAHJP collections is in full compliance with the directives set out in the law.
