The woven and padded wall, commissioned by the Library’s architects, was designed to absorb noise and preserve the quiet so essential for readers and researchers. Moreover, it adds an attractive, soft and intimate dimension to the stone building. The artist was inspired by the environs of Jerusalem and the Negev, archaeological strata of the many ancient sites in Israel, and the form and diversity of antique manuscripts; the result was a merger of nature and culture.

Gali Cnaani, an important Israeli textile artist, designed a wall woven from fabric for the new building at our request. The material she used is a jacquard fabric, about 40% of which is made of recycled polyester. This is the longest textile work in Israel, and it spans approximately 105 meters: 51 meters of which are on the wall of Harry's "Alf" cafe, and another 54 meters on the walls of the National Library's Education Center.
