We can see the two principal centers of the Jewish liturgy in the Synagogue: the Ark and the Tevah. The Ark, known in Hebrew as the Aron Kodesh or the Hekhal, is generally a respectable or ornamental closet which contains the Sifrei Torah, the Torah scrolls. In most cases, the Ark is located on the wall of the Synagogue, facing Jerusalem. As we can see on the picture, the ark is decorated with oriental motives, and a parochet serves as its door: it is a thick curtain which covers the Torah scrolls. On the top of the ark overhang the two Tablets of Law (two pieces of stone inscribed with the Ten Commandments). The second center is the Tevah, an elevated area which is intended to serve as the place where the person reading aloud from the Torah stands during the Torah reading service. At the bottom of the platform stands a monumental Chanu;Back Handwritten Text - Algeria
