The boy's mother(?) is sitting beside the two, holding a plate of apples. This is an interior scene depicting the older man's living room, with a big library filled with books, which are seen also on the table, on his lap and in front of the young boy. A 'Judenstern' (a typical lamp found in many eastern-European Jewish houses). the verse 'Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out' is written on the bottom, is also mentioned in ceremonies related to children entering the religion of Moses.
