ISRAEL CELEBRATES AT CASABLANCA CONFERENCE. |
---|---|
Scope and content |
The Casablanca Conference of October 30 - November 1 1994 was an extraordinary success for Israel, Attended by more than 2,500 political and business leaders, the summit opened the way for the almost complete opening up of the Middle East - in economic terms, Symbolically it allowed Arabs to meet with Israelis freely, openly and publicly. Politically, the conference brought the Arab boycott of Israel to all but a close and sent signals out to the rest of the world that "The Middle East is open for business" - in the words al US Secretary of State Warren Christopher. Economically and commercially businessmen from all over the region, met, made contacts, improved communications and made deals. Among other achievements were:- the opening of an Israel interest section in Rabat the setting up of a committee to look into the feasibility of opening a regional development bank the establishment of a business committee of private businessmen which will sit in New York to deal with economic cooperation and regional development the planning of the extension of Israel-Tunisia trade a hint from Bahrain's Foreign Minister that ties with all Gulf States will not be long in coming.
