The Finance Minister Avraham Shohat took the opportunity to see how work was progressing on Tel-Aviv's Ayalon Highway. The minister had earlier pledged to boost spending on a better transport infrastructure this increase in spending will help to speed up construction of new roads as well as widening existing highways and building new interchanges. The Ayalon is already one of Israel's busiest roads and it will soon be the only eight-lane highway in the country after road widening is completed early next year. In addition the new commuter railway will run parallel to the existing highway right through Tel-Aviv. The minister has also said that although the government is very mindful of environmental problems connected with new road construction, they did want to streamline the procedures for applications for new roads and railways. A Knesset bill will be introduced next year to simplify permit procedures.
