Title Tel Marsha is part of the well known cave complex of Beit Gubrin some fifteen kilometres east of Kiryat Gat.
Scope and content The many caves in the area are all man made, cut into the chalk between the 1st and 10th century B.C.E. The inhabitants of the area preferred to live in the caves as it offered them protection both from the heat in the summer and the cold of the winter. The semi-nomadic Israelite tribes also felt that the caves offered protection from the local Philistines and Cananites. The caves date the development of the start of the monarchy when the kingdom was unified under King David. Some of the caves are spectacular by their size and dimension. Many caves were used to produce olive oil and one recently excavated cave showed that it had been used for the rearing of doves. The underground complex of Tel Marsha covers some 320 dunams underground, while the infrastructure above ground is only some 24 dunams. Photo shows: the entrance to the oil press in one of the cave complexes.
