Degel Hatora 1st Convention. [picture] |
Scope and content |
Tonight saw the first convention of the ultra-religious party Degel Hatorah. The party was formed just before the last election. Following President Herzog's invitation to Shimon Peres to try and form a new government, Peres has been trying to attract the smaller parties tn support his Labour faction in the 120 seat Knesset. At the moment he seems to have only sixty members of Knesset who would support a Labour lead government. Peres has been trying to interest the ultra-religious factions of Degel Hatorah and Shas in supporting him so that he can have a parliamentary majority. Neither the Degel Hatorah or Shas would commit themselves to support Labour or the Likud faction of Itzhak Shamir until they had heard from the spiritual mentor of both parties, 97 year old Rabbi Eliiezer Shah. Speaking to a capacity all male crowd of 10,000 supporters, Rabbi Shah did not give them a definitive answer to which party to support. Most commentators feel that he lent towards the Likud, implying that Labour had been responsible for alienating an entire generation from their Jewish roots. Labour leaders thought that the vagueness of the Rabbi's speech might give certain members of the religions camp the option of joining a Labour led government. The split in the Shas party will highten the speculation that one or more of the six man Knesset faction of Shas might give Labour the vote of confidence it needs for its majority.
