Kabbalat Shabbat

Kabbalat Shabbat is a ceremony marking the transition from weekdays to Shabbat, recited precisely at these moments. The ceremony was established in the 16th century by the Kabbalists of Safed, some of whom would go out into nature to welcome the arrival of Shabbat.

The centerpiece of the ceremony is the famous piyut "Lekha Dodi," also written in the 16th century by one of the Kabbalists of Safed, Rabbi Shlomo Alkabetz. Before and after it, Psalms are recited, with some variations among traditions.

The Psalms that open the ceremony address a wide audience – the people of Israel, humanity, creation – calling on everyone to go out to meet God, sing to him and praise Him. The prayer concludes with two Psalms: "Mizmor Shir LeYom HaShabbat" (Psalms 92) and "Hashem Malakh Geut Lavesh" (Psalms 93).

The manner of reciting the Psalms differs from tradition to tradition. In North African and some Sephardic traditions, the Psalms are sung in their entirety by the entire congregation. In Ashkenazi tradition, the cantor sings the first verse of each Psalm, and the congregation quietly reads the rest, with the cantor singing out loud the last verses. In Hasidic traditions, different melodies are associated with Kabbalat Shabbat, especially with the piyut "Lekha Dodi." Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach composed his own melodic version of Kabbalat Shabbat, which has been embraced by many communities. In his version, the Psalms are sung with melodies that continue even beyond the words of the Psalms, enthusiastically accompanied by rhythmic hand clapping and even dancing.

TEHILIM 95

Come, let us sing to Hashem;
let us sound the shofar
to the Rock of our deliverance:
Let us greet His Presence
with thanksgiving,
with hymns let us raise our voices unto Him:
For a great Almighty is Hashem
and a great King over all gods:
For in His hands are the depths of the earth,
and the heights of the mountains are His:
For the sea is His, and He made it,
and the dry land, His hands formed:
Come, let us prostrate ourselves and bow;
let us kneel
before Hashem, our Maker:
For He is our God
and we are the people of His pasture,
and the flock of His hand,
[even] today if you will heed His voice:
Do not harden your heart as at Merivah,
as on the day of Massah in the desert:
When your fathers tested Me,
they tried Me,
though they had seen My work:
Forty years I quarreled with that generation;
and I said,
“They are a people of erring hearts,
and they did not know my ways.”:
Therefore I swore in My anger,
“They shall not enter My resting place.”:

TEHILIM 96

Sing to Hashem a new song
Sing to Hashem
all the [inhabitants of] earth:
Sing to Hashem, bless His Name,
proclaim His deliverance from day to day:
Recount His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all the peoples:
For Hashem is great and most extolled;
He is awesome above all gods:
For all the gods of the nations
are idols,
whereas Hashem made the heavens:
Beauty and splendor are before Him,
strength and glory are in His Sanctuary:
Ascribe to Hashem—families of peoples—
—ascribe to Hashem honor and might!:
Ascribe to Hashem the honor due His Name,
bring an offering
and come to His courtyards:
Prostrate yourselves before Hashem
in the splendor of holiness;
tremble before Him
all (peoples of) the earth!:
Declare among the nations,
“Hashem reigns!”
for He established the world
so that it cannot be moved,
He will judge the peoples with uprightness:
The heavens will rejoice,
the earth will exult,
the sea and its fullness will roar:
The field and all that is in it will jubilate,
then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy:
Before Hashem when He comes—
when He comes to judge the earth;
He will judge mankind with justice,
and peoples with His truth:

TEHILIM 97

When Hashem
is [universally accepted as] King
the earth will exult;
the multitudes of islands will rejoice:
Clouds and dense darkness surround Him;
righteousness and justice
are the foundations of His throne:
Fire will go before Him
to surround and burn His antagonists:
His lightning illuminates
the inhabited world,
the earth sees and trembles:
The mountains melt like wax
before Hashem,
before the Master of all the earth:
The heavens will declare His righteousness
and all the peoples will behold His glory:
Humiliated will be
all who serve graven images,
who are proud of idols;
before Him all gods will bow:
Zion will hear and rejoice,
and the daughters [cities] of Judah will exult
because of Your judgments, Hashem:
For You, Hashem, are most high
over all the earth;
You are greatly exalted above all gods:
Lovers of Hashem, hate evil!
He preserves the souls of His pious ones;
from the hand of the wicked, He saves them:
Light is sown for the righteous,
and for the upright in heart—joy:
Rejoice, righteous ones, in Hashem,
and give thanks to His holy Name:

TEHILIM 98

A Psalm.
Sing to Hashem, a new song
for He has performed wonders;
His right hand effected deliverance for Him
[as did] His holy arm:
Hashem has made known His deliverance,
before the eyes of the nations
He has revealed His justice:
He remembered His kindliness
and faithfulness
to the House of Israel;
all the ends of the earth have seen
the deliverance of our God:
Raise your voice unto Hashem
all [inhabitants of] the earth!
burst forth into exultation,
sing, and play music!:
Play to Hashem with a harp,
with harp and the sound of music:
With trumpets and the sound of the shofar
raise your voices before the King, Hashem:
The sea and its fullness, will roar with joy!
[also] the world
and those who dwell therein:
Rivers will clap hands,
together, mountains will sing:
Before Hashem
when He comes to judge the earth;
He will judge mankind with righteousness
and peoples with uprightness:

TEHILIM 99

When Hashem is [universally accepted as]
King,
peoples will tremble;
[Before Him Who is] enthroned
on Cherubim,
the earth will quake:
Hashem, is great in Zion,
and is high above all the peoples:
They will pay homage to Your Name,
[saying], great and awesome, It is holy:
The might of the King
is [evidenced in] His love of justice,
You have established uprightness,
justice and charity amid Jacob
You have instituted:
Exalt Hashem, our God,
and prostrate yourselves at His footstool,
holy is He:
Moses and Aaron among His priests,
and Samuel
among those who invoke His Name,
called to Hashem, and He answered them:
In a pillar of cloud He spoke to them;
they preserved His testimonies
and the statute which He gave them:
Hashem, our God, You answered them;
You were a forgiving God to them,
[yet] You took vengeance
for their misdeeds:
Exalt Hashem, our God,
and prostrate yourselves
at His holy mountain;
for Hashem, our God, is holy:

TEHILIM 100

A psalm for praise
Raise a shout for the Hashem, all the earth:
Worship Hashem in gladness;
come into His presence with shouts of joy:
Acknowledge that the Hashem is God;
He made us and we are His,
His people, the flock He tends:
Enter His gates with praise,
His courts with acclamation.
Praise Him!
Bless His name!:
For Hashem is good;
His steadfast love is eternal;
His faithfulness is for all generations:

All Israel have a share in the World to Come, as it is stated: 'And your people, all of them righteous, shall inherit the land forever, they are the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, in which I glory.'

BAME MADLIKIN

With what may one light, and with what may one not light? With regard to types of prohibited wicks, one may light neither with cedar bast [lekhesh], nor with uncombed flax [ḥosen], nor with raw silk [kalakh], nor with willow bast [petilat ha’idan], nor with desert weed [petilat hamidbar], nor with green moss that is on the surface of the water. With regard to types of prohibited oils, one may light neither with pitch [zefet], nor with wax [sha’ava], nor with castor oil [shemen kik], nor with burnt oil [shemen sereifa], nor with fat from a sheep’s tail [alya], nor with tallow [ḥelev]. Naḥum the Mede says: One may light with boiled tallow. And the Rabbis say: Both tallow that was boiled and tallow that was not boiled, one may not light with them.
One may not light with burnt oil on a Festival. Rabbi Yishmael says that one may not light with tar [itran] in deference to Shabbat because tar smells bad and disturbs those in the house. And the Rabbis permit lighting with all oils for lamps as long as they burn properly; with sesame oil, with nut oil, with turnip oil, with fish oil, with gourd oil, with tar, and even with naphtha [neft]. Rabbi Tarfon says: One may light only with olive oil.
Of all substances that emerge from the tree, one may light only with flax on Shabbat. And of all substances that emerge from the tree, the only substance that becomes ritually impure with impurity transmitted by tents over a corpse is flax. The wick of a garment, i.e., cloth made into a wick for a lamp, that one folded it into a size and shape suitable for a wick, but did not yet singe it slightly in order to facilitate its lighting, Rabbi Eliezer says: This wick is ritually impure. With regard to the laws of ritual impurity, it can, like other garments, still become ritually impure and one may not light with it on Shabbat. Rabbi Akiva says: It is ritually pure and one may even light with it on Shabbat.
A person may not pierce a hole in an eggshell and fill it with oil, and place it over the mouth of a lamp so that the egg will drip additional oil into the lamp and thereby extend the time that it burns. And even if it is not an actual egg but an earthenware vessel. And Rabbi Yehuda permits doing so. However, if the craftsman attached the egg to the lamp from the outset, one is permitted to fill it with oil because it constitutes a single, large vessel. The Rabbis decreed that a person may not fill a bowl with oil, and place it beside the lamp, and place the unlit head of the wick into the bowl so that it draws additional oil. And Rabbi Yehuda permits doing so.
One who extinguishes the lamp because he is afraid due to gentiles, and due to thieves, due to an evil spirit, due to the sick person so that he will sleep, he is exempt. However, in a case where he extinguishes the flame in order to spare the lamp, spare the oil, or spare the wick, he is liable. Rabbi Yosei exempts him in all of those cases, except for the case where he seeks to spare the wick, because he makes the wick into charcoal by extinguishing the flame.
For three transgressions women are punished and die during childbirth: For the fact that they are not careful in observing the laws of a menstruating woman, and in separating ḥalla from the dough, and in lighting the Shabbat lamp.
There are three things a person must say in his home on Shabbat eve at nightfall: Have you tithed? Have you placed the eiruv? Light the lamp. The Sages stated a principle: When there is uncertainty whether it is nightfall and uncertainty whether it is not yet nightfall, one may not tithe the crop that has definitely not been tithed, and one may not immerse ritually impure vessels in a ritual bath to render them ritually pure, and one may not light the Shabbat lights. However, one may tithe demai, doubtfully tithed produce, and one may place an eiruv and insulate the hot water to be used on Shabbat.

Rabbi Hananiah ben Akashya says: The Holy One, blessed be He, desired to merit Israel; therefore, He increased for them Torah and mitzvot, as it is stated: 'It is the Lord's desire, for the sake of His righteousness, to magnify and glorify the Torah.

in the world which He created
according to His will
and may He rule His kingdom
bring forth His redemption
and hasten the coming of His Mashiach
in your lifetime and in your days,
and in the lifetime
of the entire House of Israel,
speedily and in the near future—
and say Amen.
May His great Name be blessed
forever and for all eternity.
Blessed and praised,
glorified, and exalted and uplifted,
honored and elevated and extolled
be the Name of the Holy One, blessed is He;
above (Ten Days of Repentance: far above)
all the blessings and hymns,
praises and consolations
which we utter in the world—and say Amen.
Upon Israel, and upon our Sages,
and upon their disciples,
and upon all the disciples of their disciples,
and upon all those who engage in Torah study
in this land
and in every land.
May there be unto them and unto you
abundant peace, favor, kindness,
compassion, long life,
ample sustenance and redemption
from their Father
Who is in heaven and on earth,

TEHILIM 29

A Psalm of David.
Ascribe to Hashem—
you sons of the mighty —
ascribe to Hashem glory and might:
Ascribe to Hashem the glory due His Name,
prostrate yourselves before Hashem
in the splendor of holiness:
Hashem's voice is upon the waters.
Almighty of glory thunders,
Hashem is upon [the] many waters:
The voice of Hashem is in power,
the voice of Hashem is in beauty:
The voice of Hashem breaks cedars,
Hashem shatters
the cedars of Lebanon:
He makes them leap like a calf,
Lebanon and Sirion like unicorns:
The voice of Hashem
hews out flames of fire:
The voice of Hashem
makes the desert tremble,
Hashem makes tremble the desert of Kadesh:
The voice of Hashem causes hinds to calve,
and strips the forests bare;
and in His Sanctuary
all proclaim [His] glory:
Hashem sat enthroned (even) at the flood
Hashem is enthroned as King forever:
Hashem will give strength to His people;
Hashem will bless His people with peace:

LECHA DODI

Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.

“Preserve” and “Remember”
in a single utterance
the One Almighty caused us to hear;
Hashem is One, and His Name is One;
for fame, for glory, and for praise.

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.

To greet the Shabbat, come let us go
for it is the source of blessing;
from the very beginning, of old,
it was appointed;
last in creation, first in [God's] thought.

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.

Sanctuary of the King, royal city,
arise, come forth from the upheaval;
too long have you dwelt
in the valley of weeping;
He will show you abundant pity.

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.

Shake the dust off yourself, arise,
dress up in your garments of glory,
my people;
through the son of Yishai the Bethlehemite,
draw near to my soul and redeem it.

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.

Wake up! wake up!
for your light has come,
arise and shine.
Awaken! awaken! utter a song,
The glory of Hashem is revealed upon you.

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.

Feel not ashamed or humiliated
why are you bowed down,
why do you moan?
In you will take refuge
the poor of my people;
and the city will be rebuilt
on its ancient site.

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.

They will be ravaged,
those who ravaged you,
and they will be cast far off,
all who devour you.
Your God will rejoice over you
as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride.

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.
Right and left you will spread out.
and Hashem, you will praise;
through the man descended from Peretz
we will rejoice and exult.

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.
Come in peace, crown of her husband,
come with song, (rejoicing)
and good cheer;
amidst the faithful of the treasured people.
Come Bride, come Bride,
come Bride, Shabbos Queen!

Refrain:
Come my Beloved Friend to greet the bride,
let us welcome the Shabbat.

In some Sapehradic traditions it is said:
Blessed is the Lord who has granted rest to His people Israel on the holy Sabbath day

TEHILIM 92

A Psalm, a song for the Shabbat day.
It is good to thank Hashem,
and sing praise to Your Name, Most High.
To relate Your kindliness in the morning,
and Your faithfulness in the nights.
Upon a ten-stringed instrument and lute,
in meditation upon the harp.
For You have given me joy, Hashem,
with Your deeds,
at the work of Your hands I sing joyously.
How great are Your works, Hashem;
how infinitely profound are Your thoughts.
An empty-headed man cannot know,
nor does a fool understand this:
When the wicked bloom like grass,
and all the evildoers blossom—
it is so that they may be destroyed forever.
But You will remain on high forever
Hashem.
For behold, Your enemies, Hashem;
For behold, Your enemies shall perish;
dispersed shall be all evildoers.
You uplifted my horn like that of a unicorn;
I am saturated with fresh oil.
My eye has seen [the defeat of]
those who spy on me;
of the wicked who rise against me,
my ears have heard [that they are doomed].
The righteous will blossom like a date palm,
like a cedar in Lebanon, he will grow tall.
Planted in the House of Hashem,
in the courtyards of our God
they will blossom.
They will still be fruitful in old age;
they will be full of sap and freshness.
To declare that Hashem is upright;
He is my Stronghold;
in Whom there is no injustice.

TEHILIM 93

Hashem had begun His reign
He has clothed Himself with majesty;
Hashem has clothed Himself,
He has girded Himself with strength.
He has firmly established the world
so that it cannot be moved.
Your throne stands firm from of old,
You are from eternity.
The rivers have raised—Hashem—
the rivers have raised their voice,
the rivers raise their raging waves.
More than the sound of many waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea
Mighty on high, are You, Hashem.
Your testimonies are extremely faithful,
holiness is becoming to Your House,
Hashem—for the length of days.
