International standards

The IAN Project uses accepted international standards in the field of archiving, including the standards of the International Council on Archives (ICA). Below is a list of the main tools and international standards used in the project.

Archive registration table – IAN Project

The registration table of the IAN Project includes the essential information fields for participating in the project. The table includes information fields that will be displayed in the project catalog for the general public. The table also includes information fields that are intended to assist archive staff in managing the accessibility of the materials in accordance with copyright considerations, individual privacy and confidentiality. The table also contains a number of fields that are intended to assist in the digitization operation process (the operation fields will not be accessible to users).

Before uploading the information obtained from the archive to the project catalog, the project team attaches additional information such as credits, with references to the archive where the physical materials are deposited and additional generic information agreed between the archive team and the IAN Project team. We recommend reviewing the table along with the guidance document detailing how to list each field.

* It is important to note that these are working documents that are updated from time to time and that each archive makes adjustments according to its needs and the nature of the archive material in its possession.

ISAD (G) standard

The standard published by the ICA sets out a set of rules for describing archive materials, regardless of the structure and type of archive. In doing so, the standard promotes consistency and appropriate description for all records in order to facilitate the exchange of information and integration between archives. The standard defines six fields as mandatory fields.

Encoded Archival Description - EAD

entities and to share archival information on the Internet. The standard refers to the hierarchical structure of an archive and thus forms the basis for a complete description of a record or collection and their components. It is based on the ISAD (G) standard of the ICA. As part of the IAN Project, a new standard based on EAD has been created and constitutes its adaptation to archives in Israel – the EADI standard.

As part of the project's activities, a committee was established which examined the international standard in light of the unique needs of most of the archives in the country. The committee made adjustments and changes, thus creating the Israeli standard EADI. The standard is used to transfer archival information from institutions from the various archives to IAN. The standard is also recommended for use in the transfer of archival information in Israel outside the IAN framework.
