A detailed account of the sinking of two ships, the "Struma" and the "Mefkure", carrying hundrerds of Romanian Jewish emigrants to Palestine. The "Struma", with its 769 Jews, was torpedoed mistakenly by a Soviet submarine in February 1942. The "Mefkure" was sunk in the same way, in August 1944. Only five out of nearly 400 passengers survived. Describes the antisemitic policy and the corruption of the Antonescu regime in connection with Jewish emigration during the war. Mentions the difficulties and obstructions created by the Turkish and British authorities, which contributed to both tragedies. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)
