The Mefkure tragedy

Enlarge text Shrink text

Investigates the sinking of the small ship "Mefkure" on 5 August 1944 in the Black Sea. The ship had sailed from Constanza on 3 August with ca. 320 Jewish refugees headed for Palestine. Attempts to determine the attackers' identity by examining available documents. Rejects the suggestion that the ship was accidentally sunk by a Soviet U-boat, concluding that the "Mefkure" was deliberately sunk by two or three German craft because it sheltered five or six Polish officers of the underground in addition to Jewish refugees. The ship was set on fire and passengers on deck were machine-gunned, as were those who jumped overboard. Dogs were let into the sea to attack those who tried to swim. Only five persons survived.
