  • Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:page 421 ("Benjamin Hardin Helm", Confederate general. Born in Bardstown, Ky., and received his education at the Kentucky Military Institute near Frankfort. On July 1, 1847 he entered the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1851. Served in the U. S. Cavalry. Resigned from the Army at his father's request to study law. Graduated from the University of Louisville School of Law in 1853 and went to Harvard Law School. Practiced law with his father in Elizabethtown until 1856. In 1855 he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives for one term. Served as commonwealth attorney from 1856 to 1858 and practiced law in Louisville. Served as a general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Married to the sister of Marry Todd Lincoln. Killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863.)
