Founded in late 1940 by Franco’s regime using prisoners from labor battalions No. 24 and 201, mostly Republican POWs from the Civil War. The camp held a wide variety of prisoners: Republican fighters, common criminals, homosexuals (criminalized under Franco’s “Ley de Vagos y Maleantes” after 1954), international brigadistas (Germans, Poles, Czechs, French, Italians) and even fleeing Nazis after WWII. Closed as a camp in 1947, it was converted into a standard prison; it remained in operation into the late 1970s, eventually refurbished and reopened in 1981.
