Biographical or Historical Data
The Detroit College of Medicine was organized in 1885 by the consolidation of the Detroit Medical College, organized in 1868, and the Michigan College of Medicine, organized in 1879. It was reorganized as the Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery in 1913. In 1918 it became a municipal institution under the control of the Board of Education. In 1934 the name was changed to Wayne University College of Medicine as a part of a program of consolidation of the Detroit city colleges into a university system. The name was changed in 1964 to School of Medicine.
