Historian, ethnographer, folklorist, and lexicographer. He taught at Kharkiv University and various schools in Kharkiv, then taught at both St. Petersburg and Moscow Universities. From 1902 to his death he was the director of the Museum of Antiquities of Katerynoslav Gubernia (later the Dnipropetrovske Historical Museum). His scholarly interest, the history of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, earned him the nickname 'Father of the Zaporozhians')
