Located in the northeastern part of the state, it is bounded by Yadgir District to the north; Vijayapura (Bijapur) and Bagalkot districts to the northwest; Koppal District to the west, Ballary District to the south; and the Jogulamba Gadwal District of Telangana and Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh to the east.
