  • Wash. place names database, via WWW, Jan. 29, 2003(American River (Ts.16,17N;Rs.11-14E) - The American River rises at the eastern side of the crest of the Cascades in forks north and south of Chinook Pass in northwest Yakima County. It flows east by north about twenty miles to the Naches River near Sawmill Flat. An early name of the river was Miners Creek. As the area developed a patriotic title which was not used for other rivers in the state was chosen. Gossett (p. 455) writes that it was named for the American River in California "...by hopeful miners...")
