In the 14th cent. the city was seized by Lithuania, but after the 1559 peace accord it was ceded to Poland. After the third partition of Poland in 1795 the city was annexed by Russia, where it became part of the Volynsʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo. By 1797 the city had become part of the Volynsʹka hubernii︠a︡. During WWI Kaminʹ-Kashyrsʹkyĭ was occupied by Austro-Hungarian troops, and during 1919-1920 the city was fought over by Red Army and Polish forces. By terms of the 1921 peace treaty the entire area of Western Volynia was ceded to Poland. In 1939 as part of Western Ukraine this area was incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR.
