- Encyc. of Ukraine:v. 5, p. 13 (Starobilske [Starobil's'ke], a city and raion center in Luhanske oblast. The site of the Sloboda Bilske [no publs. in LC data base], founded in the 16th century, became deserted and was resettled by Cossacks from Ostrohozke regiment in 1683. The settlement was destroyed by the Russian Army in 1709. The new sloboda, established in 1732 was named Stara Bila [no publs. in LC data base]. In 1797 it was promoted to city status, renamed Starobilske, and designated a county center in Slobidska Ukraine. From 1835 it was a county center in Kharkiv gubernia)
- Russian Brockhaus:v. 31, p. 444 (Starobi︠e︡lʹsk; an uyezd city in Kharʹkovskai︠a︡ gubernīi︠a︡. The settlement of Bi︠e︡lʹskīĭ gorod [no publs. in LC data base] arose in 1686. In 1708 Bi︠e︡lʹskīĭ gorod became part of the Azovskai︠a︡ gubernīi︠a︡; in 1732 it was transferred to the Voronezhskai︠a︡ gubernīi︠a︡, and in 1797 it was reassigned to Slobodsko-Ukraina and renamed to Starobi︠e︡lʹsk. From 1802 to 1825 the city was again made part of the Voronezhskai︠a︡ gubernīi︠a︡ and once more transferred to Slobodsko-Ukraina.
