  • Rasmussen, R. Historical dict. of Zimbabwe, 1990(Shangani Patrol (aka Wilson Patrol) (1893) The Shangani Patrol traditionally symbolized to many European settlers the blood sacrifice made in occupying the country during the early 1890s. After the BSAC had occupied the Ndebele capital during the Ndebele War, L.S. Jameson dispatched Major P.W. Forbes with a column to pursue King Lobengula. On Dec. 3 the force camped on the south bank of the Shangani River. Forbes sent Major Allan Wilson and a few dozen men across the river to reconnoiter. Wilson's Patrol was trapped by the Ndebele, who then killed all 34 of its members.)
